Palomar Falls to No. 14 College of the Canyons, 26-7

SAN MARCOS, CA (9/21/2024) -- In a tough matchup on Saturday afternoon, Palomar College struggled to find its footing, falling 26-7 to No. 14 College of the Canyons. The Comets dropped to 1-2 on the season as Canyons capitalized on turnovers and controlled the tempo with a relentless defense.

Canyons took an early lead, building a 6-0 advantage in the first quarter with two field goals from Luis Rodriguez (25 and 37 yards). The Comets had their chances but were plagued by turnovers and penalties throughout the first half. After Palomar fumbled on a promising drive in the first quarter, Canyons tacked on another two field goals in the second, including a booming 53-yard kick by Rodriguez, making the score 12-0 at halftime.

Palomar finally found the end zone in the third quarter after an 8-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from Chris Bausch. Jonathon Meyers' extra point made it 12-7, giving the Comets hope of a comeback.

However, Canyons quickly responded, scoring twice within three minutes. Logan Scarlett connected with Ray Hall for a 73-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 27-yard strike to Deandre Kermah after a short drive. Those back-to-back scores gave the Cougars a commanding 26-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

Despite the Comet defense making several key stops, including a sack by Jaiden Letua and pressure from Jacob Sisson and Kavyion Hicks, Palomar couldn't find offensive rhythm. Quarterbacks Andrew Tapley and Jakob Harris combined for two interceptions, and Palomar converted only 5 of 14 third-down attempts. Additionally, Palomar was held to just 26 rushing yards, with Bausch leading the way at 25 yards on 10 carries.

Palomar's offense struggled in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over on downs twice and throwing an interception late in the game. Despite several drives in Canyons territory, the Comets couldn't capitalize and fell short in their comeback attempt.

The Comets will look to regroup as they prepare for their next contest, hoping to bounce back from this loss.
