SAN MARCOS (11-14-2017) -- Palomar linebacker Chandler Wachholtz, a 6-foot-0, 220-pound sophomore who played for former Comet player and assistant coach Sean Sovacool at La Costa Canyon High School, has been selected  both as Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men's Athlete of the Week for all sports.

Tyson Dyer, the Comets' punter, has been named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

Wachholtz, a sophomore linebacker who starred for former Palomar linebacker and ex-Comet assistant coach Sean Sovacool at La Costa Canyon High School, recorded 12 tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss, leding Palomar's nig-play defense which was the difference in a 17-14 victory over Grossmont to close out the regular season. His performance helped enable the Comets to become bowl eligible and helped catapult into a berth in the Beach Bowl against El Camino College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Warriors' Murdock Stadium.

Dyer, a freshman from Queensland, Australia, somehow got his first punt away in the win over Grossmont after the long snapper dribbled the ball back to him on the ground. He then averaged 44.2 yards for his other five punts, two inside the 20 including a 61-yarder that was downed at the Griffins' 5-yard line.
