Carr, Scott and Widener to the big leagues

SAN MARCOS, CA (7/11/2023) -- Kyle Carr, Quincy Scott and Palomar alum Jacob Widener were drafted in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft. Carr, the lefthanded starting ace, was selected in the third round, 96th overall and the first junior college athlete selected, by the New York Yankees. Widener and Scott were selected nearly back-to-back in the 9th round, with Widener going as the 259th pick and Scott as the 261st pick. Widener was selected by the Kansas City Royals and Scott was selected by the Texas Rangers. This is the first time in recent memory the Comets had three athletes selected in the top 10 rounds.

While the season didn't end the way the Comets had in mind, the postseason awards started to roll in for them. Carr was named the ABCA West Region Pitcher of the Year before being named the ABCA Pitcher of the Year. Scott was the ABCA West Region Player of the Year and was later named the ABCA Player of the Year. Both were named All-Americans and were named the South Pitcher and Player of the Year by the CCCBCA.

Carr transferred to Palomar from the University of San Diego. This past season for the Comets, he had a state-best 12-1 record and a 2.31 ERA in 15 appearances. In 78 innings pitched he struck out 111. In his final two appearances, he recorded 13 and 10 strikeouts, respectively.

Scott, a two-year starter for the Comets, finished with a career slash line of .414/.481/.577. He totaled 150 hits in 90 games, including 43 extra-base hits. This past season he had six home runs and struck out just eight times in 162 at-bats. He hit .438 this season. Scott proved he can on the base paths as well, racking up eight stolen bases this season.

Widener played during the 2020 season for the Comets where he only had a handful of appearances before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. From Palomar, Widener transferred to Oral Roberts University, where he finished up his career. Widener helped lead ORU to the 2023 Men's College World Series. This season, Widener had a 2.90 ERA and went 2-2 in 30 appearances. In 49.2 innings pitched, he allowed 20 runs on 31 hits and recorded 80 strikeouts. In the MCWS, Widener pitched against Florida and allowed just one hit and recorded four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched.

Congrats to these Comets!
