Ex-PC Pitchers Lift Mariners, Astros On Same Night

MINNEAPOLIS / HOUSTON / CHICAGO (6-15-2017-2017) -- Palomar alumni pitchers Nick Vincent and James "Jimmy" Hoyt continued strong seasons on Wednesday night in Major League baseball action.

Six-year MLB veteran Nick Vincent recorded his sixth hold of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.05, coming in to get the first two outs of the eighth inning before Edwin Diaz notched the save as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-4 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Vincent (Ramona High School, Palomar, Long Beach State), who was making his 27th appearance of 2017, trimmed his career ERA to 2.84. He's 2-1 on the season coming out of the bullpen and has 20 strikeouts and 4 walks in 26 1/3 innings.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Hoyt (Boise, Idaho High School, Palomar, Centenary College of Louisiana), in his second MLB season, struck out 4 batters and walked 0 in two relief innings in the Astros' 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers before a crowd of 37,221 at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

It was Hoyt's seventh hold on the season for the Astros, who continued to have the best record in Major League Baseball. In 22 1/3 innings, he's struck out 40 batters (an average of 16.1 strikeouts per 9 innings), while walking 5. Hoyt is 1-0 with a 4.84 ERA.

The third Palomar alum currently in the Major Leagues, Tyler Saladino of the Chicago White Sox, continues to be sidelined with back spasms while spending most of the past month on the disabled list and will be sent to the team's spring training complex for rehabilitation.

Saladino (University City High School, Palomar, Oral Roberts University), in his third Major League season, had been the White Sox' regular second base starter, also appearing as a starter at shortstop and third base before missing 8 of 10 games due to his back injury and going on the DL for the first time since last August.

Saladino batted .282 while playing in 93 games for the White Sox in 2016.
