Comets Capture Third at PCAC Championships with Strong All-Around Effort

SAN DIEGO, CA (4/19/2025) -- The Palomar College women's track and field team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion, finishing third overall as a team at the 2025 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) Championships, hosted by Southwestern College. The Comets delivered top performances on the track, in the field, and in the multi-events, with several athletes posting season-best marks.

In the 800 meters, Lauren Gonzalez advanced to the final with a prelim time of 2:41.48 and improved her placement by finishing 7th in the final (2:44.04). Brianna Figueroa (2:59.42), Kyara Emanuel (3:10.85), and Jazmyn Brinkman (3:22.75) rounded out the Palomar entries in the event.

In the 1500 meters, Hannah Strate finished 5th (6:12.33) and Brinkman placed 7th (6:57.74). Gonzalez and Strate doubled back for the 5000 meters, finishing 7th (21:37.67) and 8th (22:09.31), respectively. Strate also delivered a huge effort in the 10,000 meters, claiming 3rd place with a time of 45:39.68—her highest finish of the meet.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Roxana Contreras, Hannah Strate, Brianna Figueroa, and Lauren Gonzalez ran 5:16.82 to earn 4th place, improving on their Cerritos Invitational time by over 12 seconds.

Roxana Contreras had another standout day in the field and multis. She took 2nd in the pole vault (2.20m), 2nd in the javelin (24.90m), and finished 9th in the long jump (4.44m). In the heptathlon, she placed 3rd overall with a score of 2704, a significant improvement over her performance at the SoCal Heptathlon.

The Comets were dominant in the throws, led by Fialupe Vaivai, who claimed 2nd place in three events: shot put (9.76m), discus (32.83m), and hammer (31.33m), while also placing 6th in the javelin (20.38m).

Morgan Fornof added a series of clutch performances, finishing 3rd in both the shot put (9.59m) and hammer (30.14m), 4th in the discus (27.34m), and 4th in the javelin (23.00m).

Sophia Wicks continued her consistent form, placing 6th in the shot put (8.25m), 5th in the discus (26.21m), 4th in the hammer (28.36m), and 8th in the javelin (18.05m). Gonzalez also stepped into the javelin circle, throwing 18.66m for 7th place.

With the regular season now wrapped, the Comets will shift focus to postseason opportunities and continue building on their momentum.
