Comets finish in 7th at State

Comets family and friends,

This past weekend, we concluded our 2023 season at the 3C2A Championships hosted by Cuesta College. The team finished in 7th place, our highest placement at the championship tournament in over five years.

I am happy with our team performance for the most part, especially considering they had us ranked 11th in the last ranking, and we were short one ranked guy who was injured at regionals (Danny Cox). I'm proud that virtually everyone peaked and either did better than or as well as expected.

Final 3C2A team standings:

  1. Mt. San Antonio College
  2. Sacramento City College
  3. Fresno City College
  4. Cerritos College
  5. Bakersfield College
  6. Rio Hondo
  7. Palomar College
  8. Santa Ana College
  9. Skyline College
  10. Chabot College
  11. Victor Valley College
  12. College Of Redwoods
  13. Modesto Junior College
  14. Moorpark College
  15. Sierra College
  16. West Hills College
  17. Santa Rosa College
  18. Lassen College
  19. Cuesta College
  20. Shasta College
  21. East Los Angeles College
  22. Delta College

How our participants fared:

141 - Elijah Nero: While he lost a heartbreaker to end his season, Elijah stepped up for his team in the postseason. All I can ask for as a coach is that wrestlers buy-in and continually look to improve. It's clear that Elijah responded to our coaching and believed in the process because his best wrestling of the season was at the regional and state tournaments. With a good offseason and some strength training, I expect to see Elijah in the mix for a spot on the top of the podium next season.

149 - Dorian Parker: I'm so happy for this guy. He's been dealt a tough hand in past years with doing everything right yet being on the wrong side of luck. Dorian rose to the occasion to beat two tough opponents back to back to earn a top 6 finish and become a 3C2A medalist. Congrats on an excellent career, Dorian!

157 - Anthony Perez: While I know Anthony is still down on himself for not walking away with the title, I am very proud of how he battled back to 4th after a tough loss in the quarterfinals. As I told him, learning how to respond to a loss is just part of developing a champion's mindset. Anthony had an excellent season and can now call himself a state medalist and All-American!

174 - DJ WeimerRanked only 7th coming into the postseason, DJ made a statement by earning 3rd place at the regional and state tournaments. His only loss was a double-overtime heartbreaker in the quarterfinals. DJ dominated everyone else, including a tech fall in the 3rd place match. He just keeps improving mentally and technically. The goal for next season is not just to win but to dominate this tournament. Congrats on becoming an All-American, DJ!

184 - Rabih BadraniI thought Rabih looked great the past two weekends. He was very close to earning a state medal in the blood round, but one exchange lost him an otherwise great match. Rabih has tons of natural talent and toughness, and with some more experience, he could be scary good. Great season, Rabih!

197 - Liam ClarkLiam had an off-day, as all wrestlers sometimes do. He got caught in a few positions against some tough competitors and didn't really get the chance to get to his stuff. Liam had an otherwise great season and was an excellent leader for our team. Congrats on an awesome juco career, Liam!

285 - Mustafa FarhaIf there's one thing I can say about Mustafa, it's that his matches are never boring, and he always brings the attitude. Mustafa dug deep for his team, scoring 8 team points and earning an 8th-place state medal. I know that Mustafa wanted more, but as I told him, he was never ranked in the top 8 (or even honorable mention) and still earned a spot on the podium. Congrats on your state medal, Mustafa!

285 - Brayan Macias: I know that Brayan is a little down about how his season ended, but wrestling is a tough sport, and it's an even tougher sport when battling serious injuries. I am proud of Brayan for going out and fighting all season and his improvements since becoming a Comet. Keep in mind that this guy had only four matches before college. Congrats on a great career, Brayan!
