Comets place 6th at Meathead Mover's

Comets family and friends,

This past weekend we wrestled at the Meathead Movers Invitational tournament at Cuesta College. We had a full squad of 22 wrestlers competing at the event, which featured teams from all throughout the state. There were even a few non-3C2A teams in attendance, including rookie teams from Menlo and Cal Poly.

As a team, we placed 6th overall and had four place winners.

Dorian Parker, 4th - I thought Dorian looked solid this weekend, other than a close loss against a Cerritos opponent. He has turned a corner this year with his confidence and technique. If Dorian can open up just a bit more and trust his offense against the top-level guys, he'll certainly be in the mix for a title come December.

Anthony Perez, CHAMPION - Anthony is wrestling each match with purpose and attitude. I most proud that he is making the right tactical adjustments and wrestling his ideal match. He was able to beat the #3 and #4 opponents in the state convincingly to bring home the title.

DJ Weimer, 4th - In a short time, DJ has proven that he has what it takes to beat anyone in the 3C2A. He's actively working to figure out his ideal match/style and hasn't been afraid to mix things up to get better for when it counts. He's a Bakersfield Driller, so he's used to the saying "it's not about today, but what we do today to prepare for State!" DJ is right where he needs to be at this point in the season.

Danny Cox, 6th - Danny (just Danny, not Daniel) has already improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. I'm proud of the heart and fight he shows in each match, especially the come-from-behind armbar pin that was one of my favorite matches of the tournament. With a bit more offense and game planning, he could be a force to reckon with in December.

My thoughts on the weekend:

I'm very proud of this team and their fight. As far as performance—some good, some bad, lots of learning. I thought our effort was on point, and it's clear that we want to win. However, I thought that we made lots of simple technical and tactical mistakes that we need to correct if we want to finish the season to our potential. The plan—we're going to keep doubling down on our baseline positioning and technique until it's second nature. It's not enough to work hard at this game. You have to work hard in the right ways!!

What's Next

Up next, we'll have Rio Hondo tonight at 7 p.m. and then our last home dual of the season next Thursday at 7 p.m.
