Three Comets sign with Division II schools

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/9/2020) – Three women's basketball players have committed to two NCAA Division II schools. Nikki Mayoral has verbally committed to California State University, San Bernardino. Melena Bland and Aaliyah Taylor will remain teammates as they have both verbally committed to California State University, Los Angeles.

During her time as a Comet, Mayoral averaged 14.6 minutes and 10.5 points per game. She had a field goal percentage of 33.9 and sot 74.6 percent at the charity stripe. She was an integral part of the Comet's campaign this season as she started in 29 of their 30 games. She posted a career-high 33 points against Southwestern College on Feb. 21. Her honors as a Comet include 1st Team All-PCAC (2020), 2nd Team All-PCAC (2018), PCAC Athlete-of-the-Month (Nov. 2019), 2nd Team All-State (2020).

Melena Bland played one season for the Comets where she started in 25 games. Bland shot 75.6 percent at the free-throw line and 36.6 percent in the field. She had a career-high 19 points against San Diego Mesa College on Jan. 24. Bland turned it on the second half of the season when she had a four-game double-digit scoring streak. She recorded one double-double this season, scoring 17 points against San Diego City and grabbing 11 rebounds on Feb. 7. Bland was also named to the 1st Team All-PCAC this season and was the PCAC Athlete-of-the-Month (Dec. 2019).

Taylor also played one season for Palomar. She had a 39.6 field goal percentage and 48.6 free throw percentage. She had a career-high 20 points against Mt. San Antonio College on Dec. 16. She recorded two double-doubles this season, one against Mt. SAC and the other against Chabot College. Taylor was named PCAC Athlete-of-the-Month (Jan. 2020).

All three players reign from Mission Hills High School. CSUSB was 4-21 last season while CSULA was 12-16. Both schools are a part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
