Comets clinch PCAC flag as Flaviani blanks Griffins

EL CAJON, CA (4/16/2025) – Kiara Flaviani pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout in her second career collegiate start as Palomar College clinched its 11th consecutive Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship Wednesday with a 6-0 victory over Grossmont College.

By improving to 13-0 in conference play, the Comets have an insurmountable lead in the PCAC standings with two conference games remaining. The state's second-ranked team raised its record to 32-3 overall, with Grossmont falling to 3-9 in conference and 10-22 overall.

Flaviani made her second winning start in as many days for the Comets. The freshman right-hander faced just two batters over the minimum for seven innings as the Griffins' only baserunners reached on two-out singles in the second and seventh innings. Flaviani walked none and struck out four while delivering Palomar's 17th shutout of the season.

Offensive support for Flaviani came from 10 hits, and Grossmont contributed to the Comets' cause with five errors. The visitors broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning as a leadoff double by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez was followed by singles from sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz and sophomore second baseman Josephine Hueberger in addition to an outfield error which led to a 2-0 Palomar lead.

The winners added two more runs in the fifth on a double by freshman first baseman Alexis Huey, a walk to freshman designated hitter Lauren Doepping and a two-run single by freshman Taylor Armstrong. Two additional runs crossed the plate in the seventh inning when Doepping singled and scored on a two-out double by freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez, and sophomore catcher Kayla Visser came around to score the game's final run on an infield error after being hit by a pitch.

Heuberger, Huey and Armstrong all had two hits apiece for the Comets, who host San Diego City for a PCAC matchup on April 17 before entertaining College of the Canyons in a non-conference doubleheader on April 19.

Palomar ends the regular season with a home game against Grossmont on April 22. The California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs begin May 2.
