Lutz, Nuanez spark Comets past Mesa

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/10/2025) – The leadoff batter and the No. 9 batter in the order combined to go 6-for-6 at the plate with five runs scored, lifting Palomar College to an 8-0 victory Thursday over San Diego Mesa in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball contest.

Sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz was 3-for-3 from her leadoff spot with two singles, a double and a walk which led to a run for the Comets, who boosted their lead in the PCAC standings to 3½ games over Mesa by improving their record to 11-0 in conference play and 29-3 overall.

At the other end of the batting order for Palomar was freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez, who collected three singles and scored three runs to help send the state's No. 2-ranked team to its third 8-0 decision over the Olympians this season while sweeping three wins from Mesa, which dropped to 17-14 overall and 7-3 in the PCAC.

Palomar finished off the Olympians in five innings, with second baseman Josephine Hueberger delivering the final blow with a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth. The rally began when Nuanez reached base with one out following her third hit of the game, a single to right field.

Lutz followed suit with her third hit of the game, a double to right-center field which advanced Nuanez to third. With Palomar needing just one additional run to bring the mercy-run rule into effect, Hueberger singled up the middle to score Nuanez with the game-ending tally.

Also highlighting the Comets' 11-hit attack was a two-run opposite-field home run to right by sophomore first baseman Zoe Karam, her team-leading 11th homer of the season which gave the hosts a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Karam and Heuberger each had two hits to help support winning pitcher Maddie Bedolla, who improved to 16-1 on the season while shutting out the Olympians on one hit over four innings in the circle. The sophomore left-hander walked two and struck out five.

Sophomore right-hander Nevaeh Haywood pitched a scoreless fifth inning to preserve Palomar's 15th shutout of the season.

The Comets will host No. 15 Mt. San Antonio on April 12 for a non-conference game at 12 noon. Palomar will then finish out the final full week of the regular season with five games in five days, beginning with a home conference game April 15 against Imperial Valley at 1 p.m.
