Comets streak past Southwestern, 10-1

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/18/2025) – Breanna Lutz scored on all four of her plate appearances and ended the game with a walk-off three-run home run as Palomar College extended its win streak to 11 games with a 10-1 victory Tuesday over Southwestern in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball matchup.

Lutz, a sophomore third baseman, led off the bottom of the first inning with a stand-up triple to right-center field, and she scored Palomar's first run ahead of a single up the middle by sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger. Lutz was hit by a pitch with one out in the second inning and scored on a two-run triple to right by Heuberger.

After drawing a one-out walk in the fourth, Lutz came around to score on a two-out single to left by freshman designated hitter Alexis Huey. Freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong doubled to left to score freshman first baseman Zoe Karam as the Comets established a 7-1 lead going into the fifth inning.

Starting pitcher Nevaeh Haywood limited the Jaguars to one run on five hits through four innings, and Maddie Bedolla pitched a perfect top of the fifth to set the stage for Lutz in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez singled to center with one out, and sophomore Lauren Stehly followed with a pinch-hit single to right before Lutz bombed her team-leading seventh home run over the fence in center to bring on the mercy-run rule.

Lutz also homered in Palomar's previous game, hitting a leadoff blast in the first inning against San Diego City. Her four runs against Southwestern helped the No. 2-ranked Comets improve to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Jaguars dipped to 5-15 and 1-3 with the loss.

Lutz, Heuberger and Huey had two hits apiece, and freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia added a two-run single which gave the hosts a 3-0 first-inning lead.

Haywood, a sophomore right-hander, struck out five batters and walked none while improving to 7-2 on the season. Bedolla, a sophomore left-hander, struck out two of the three batters she faced in the fifth.

Palomar has seven straight road games awaiting on the upcoming schedule, beginning with a PCAC contest at San Diego Mesa on March 20 at 3 p.m. The Comets will travel north to Bakersfield College the following day for a single game against the Renegades before playing two games on March 22 against Bakersfield again and Folsom Lake.

Following a conference doubleheader at Imperial Valley on March 25, Palomar will have another PCAC contest at San Diego City on March 27 before returning home March 29 for a non-conference doubleheader against No. 4 Cypress.
