Comets cage Tigers with big bats, one-hitter

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/21/2025) – Supported by nine extra-base hits, three Palomar College pitchers combined on a five-inning, one-hit shutout as the Comets rolled to a 15-0 softball victory Friday over Riverside City.

Palomar amassed 14 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and a home run while improving its record to 8-2 with the nonconference win. The Comets batted around in both the first and second innings to register more than enough runs needed for the mercy-run rule to take effect.

The offensive onslaught began in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run by sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz, who lined the first pitch she saw over the right-field fence for her first round-tripper of the season. The Comets didn't stop there, sending 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame to score seven runs.

A walk issued to freshman third baseman Zoe Karam was followed by back-to-back doubles by freshman designated player Lauren Doepping and sophomore catcher Isabella De Filippis, a triple by freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia, an infield error and another double by freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez, chasing the starting pitcher for Riverside City (2-7).

An RBI single by sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger capped the first-inning rally, and Heuberger also singled for one of Palomar's seven hits during an eight-run second inning. Back-to-back doubles by Karam and Doepping ignited the second-inning rally, which saw 12 batters come to the plate.

A run-scoring single by Gonzalez, a two-run double by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez, another two-run double by Lutz and a single by Karam for her second hit of the inning all contributed to the Comets taking a 15-0 lead.

Sophomore pitcher Maddie Bedolla started in the circle and pitched three perfect innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. The left-hander struck out the side in the first inning and fanned seven of the nine batters she faced. Freshman right-hander Kiara Flaviani pitched a perfect fourth inning, and wrapping up the shutout with a scoreless fifth inning was freshman right-hander Hailey White, who allowed a leadoff single before erasing that baserunner on a double-play liner back to the circle.

White struck out the final Tigers batter as the visitors sent the minimum of 15 batters to the plate.

The Comets will have three straight road games next week, beginning Feb. 27 when Palomar begins its Pacific Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a 3 p.m. contest at Southwestern. The Comets have non-conference games at Orange Coast on Feb. 28 and Cerritos on March 1 before returning home March 4 for a PCAC matchup against San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m.
