Palomar prevails to take down Dons, 10-3

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/19/2025) – Playing at home for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Palomar College softball team overcame a rough start Wednesday to notch a 10-3 nonconference victory over Santa Ana.
 
Sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger had three hits at the plate, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cap a six-run rally which lifted the Comets to their seventh win against two losses. Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla pitched four innings of scoreless relief, striking out the side in the seventh inning to polish off her third win of the season.
 
Santa Ana (6-4), playing its fourth straight game against a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opponent, brought a three-game win streak into the contest and took a 2-0 first-inning lead courtesy of three Palomar errors after two outs were recorded.
 
The Comets tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on singles by freshman designated player Lauren Doepping and freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia, and a two-run triple to left-center field by freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong.
 
The Dons reclaimed the lead in the top of the third with a run on two hits, but the hosts tied the game again at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a single by Heuberger, an infield error and a two-out RBI single by sophomore catcher Isabella De Filippis.
 
Palomar assumed a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Heuberger manufactured a run after reaching with a two-out infield single. Heuberger stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by the Santa Ana catcher.
 
A leadoff single by freshman third baseman Zoe Karam ignited Palomar's six-run outburst in the fifth. Doepping's second hit of the game, another triple by Armstrong, a run-scoring single by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez and three Santa Ana errors all preceded Heuberger's second homer of the season, a laser to right field which capped the scoring.
 
Sophomore right-hander Nevaeh Haywood started in the circle for the Comets and pitched three innings, allowing three runs (one earned) with one walk and one strikeout. Bedolla took over in the top of the fourth inning, retiring 11 of the 12 batters she faced. She allowed one walk and struck out seven, including six of the last seven batters.
 
Bedolla fanned the side in the seventh, all looking, while improving her record to 3-0.
 
The Comets return home Feb. 21 to host Riverside City in another nonconference matchup at 2 p.m. Conference play begins for Palomar on Feb. 27 with a 3 p.m. contest at Southwestern.
