Comets stung by Hornets, 3-1
FULLERTON, CA (2/11/2025) – Palomar College suffered its second setback of the softball season on Tuesday when Comets travelled to Fullerton and dropped a 3-1 decision to the defending state champion Hornets.
The nonconference game was moved up one day on the schedule in anticipation of rain, and the loss ended a three-game win streak for Palomar (4-2). The win halted a three-game skid for Fullerton (3-4) despite the Hornets being held to three hits.
The hosts took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a two-out infield error which was followed by a hit batter and a two-run double. Fullerton added a run in the third inning on a solo home run to pad its lead to 3-0.
After being held scoreless on one hit through the first four innings, Palomar got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong led off the inning with a single to left field and was sacrificed to second by freshman pinch-hitter Alexis Huey.
A pinch-hit single to left by sophomore Breanna Lutz scored Armstrong to close the deficit to 3-1. A two-out single by sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger advanced Lutz to third, but an infield pop-up ended the inning without any further scoring.
The Comets threatened in the sixth when the first two batters reached base as pinch-hitters. Sophomore Paige McLeod led off with a single to center and was followed by a walk to freshman Dominique Garcia. The two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher Kayla Visser, but a force out at home plate and a strikeout squelched the threat.
The visitors went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Palomar sophomore Nevaeh Haywood started in the circle and pitched four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk, one strikeout and one hit batter. Her record is now 3-2. Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla pitched two perfect innings in relief with two strikeouts.
Heuberger had two of Palomar's five hits.
Palomar will take to the road again on Feb. 14, continuing its nonconference schedule in Lancaster for a doubleheader against Antelope Valley. The Comets are slated to return home Feb. 19 to host Santa Ana.
