Comets prevail at Mt. SAC, 5-4

WALNUT, CA (2/8/2025) – A sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore designated player Kayla Visser drove in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as Palomar College outlasted Mt. San Antonio College, 5-4, in a nonconference softball matchup of former state champions.

Freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong scored on Visser's fly after reaching base on an infield error to lead off the seventh and advancing to third on the miscue. Stepping to the plate as a pinch-hitter, Visser delivered a fly ball to left to bring home Armstrong with the game winner.

Sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger and freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez had three hits apiece for the Comets, who improved to 4-1 with their win over the Mounties (4-3).

Heuberger led off the top of the third inning with a single and came around to score ahead of a bases-loaded walk issued to sophomore catcher Isabella De Filippis. That run tied the score at 1-1, and Palomar took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Gonzalez doubled with two out, followed by Heuberger's third single of the game and a walk to freshman first baseman Zoe Karam to load the bases.

Freshman designated player Lauren Doepping then drove in two runs with a single, which gave Doepping nine hits over nine consecutive at-bats.

Mt. SAC tied the game at 3-3 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the visitors reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth when a walk to freshman shortstop Alexis Huey, a single by Gonzalez and a walk to freshman first baseman Zoe Karam loaded the bases before Huey scored on a fielder's choice grounder to third by Doepping.

A walk, an error and a hit batter led to the Mounties tying the score again at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth before the Comets prevailed in the seventh.

Palomar sophomore pitcher Nevaeh Haywood started and worked four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk. Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla pitched three innings in relief and picked up the win for her first decision of the season.

Bedolla allowed one run on two hits with one walk, a hit batter and three strikeouts. She retired the hosts in order in the bottom of the seventh inning on a groundout and two strikeouts.

Palomar has three more road games scheduled before returning for a home contest on Feb. 19 against Santa Ana. Weather permitting, the Comets will visit defending state champion Fullerton on Feb. 12 before travelling to Lancaster for a doubleheader against Antelope Valley on Feb. 14.
