Doepping’s hot bat powers Comets past SBVC, Mt. San Jacinto
SAN MARCOS, CA (2/6/2025) – After rolling to victory the previous day at its first road game of the season, the Palomar College softball team won again Thursday with a 7-0 shutout against Mt. San Jacinto.
Freshman designated player Lauren Doepping and freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez combined for seven hits to lead the host Comets (3-1) past Mt. San Jacinto while supporting winning pitcher Nevaeh Haywood, who spun a four-hit shutout for her third win of the season.
Doepping, who was 3-for-3 at the plate in Wednesday's 18-0 romp at San Bernardino Valley College, added four singles the following day against Mt. San Jacinto, including a two-run single to center field to close out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. With a single in her final at-bat against Saddleback on Jan. 29, Doepping has hit safely in eight consecutive plate appearances over three games.
Gonzalez, batting ninth in the order, broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run double to center field in the bottom of the second inning following singles by Doepping and sophomore catcher Isabella De Filippis. Gonzalez also singled twice, including leading off the sixth inning before she scored ahead of a single by sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz.
A run-scoring groundout by freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong and a two-out RBI single by De Filippis gave Palomar a 4-0 lead in the fifth before the Comets added three runs in the sixth.
Haywood blanked the Eagles on four hits over seven innings for her first shutout of the season. She walked three, struck out four and dodged a threat by the visitors in the sixth inning thanks to a clutch double play turned by the Palomar defense.
The first two Mt. San Jacinto batters reached on singles to start the sixth, but a grounder to Lutz at third base led to two outs when she threw out the batter at first base and freshman first baseman Zoe Karam relayed to home where De Filippis made the tag at the plate on the lead baserunner to complete the double play. A flyout to Armstrong in left field ended the inning.
Lutz, Karam and De Filippis had two hits apiece as the Comets collected 15 hits against Mt. San Jacinto (3-2).
In Wednesday's win at San Bernardino Valley College, the Comets had the mercy-run rule in effect after one-half inning of play as they scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to victory from there.
Lutz led off the first-inning onslaught with a triple to right field, the first of seven extra-base hits for the Comets. Lutz also delivered a run-scoring single later in the inning and was one of three Palomar players to finish with two hits.
Doepping has three hits to lead a 19-hit assault for the Comets against the Wolverines (1-6). Doepping slugged a pinch-hit, three-run home run to center field in the third inning and added a run-scoring single in the fifth to account for four RBIs.
After replacing Lutz at third, sophomore third baseman Julianna Rocha provided a double and a single for the winners, and Gonzalez also had two hits with a double and a single.
Four Palomar pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout over five innings. Haywood started and pitched two perfect innings for the win, striking out the side in the first and fanning four of the six batters she faced.
Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla struck out the side in the third, and freshman right-handers Hailey White and Kiara Flaviani spun one scoreless inning apiece with each allowing one hit.
Palomar plays its next four games on the road, beginning Feb. 8 at Mt. San Antonio College at noon. The next home game for the Comets is Feb. 19 against Santa Ana at 2 p.m.
