Comets drop nonconference game to Hornets

FULLERTON (2/23/2024) – Taking the field for the first time in a week due to ongoing rain delays, Palomar College suffered its first defeat of the softball season on Friday at Fullerton when the Comets dropped an 8-1 decision to the Hornets.

The nonconference loss left the Comets with an 8-1 record going into Saturday's three-way against Mt. San Antonio and Santiago Canyon. Those games were originally scheduled to be played at Bradley Park in San Marcos but were moved to Mt. SAC due to wet field conditions.

Palomar fell behind 6-0 after four innings before the Comets scored their only run against Fullerton in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by freshman catcher Kayla Visser. Palomar was limited to three hits in the contest, including a double and a single by sophomore third baseman Itzell De Los Rios, who scored the Comets' only run.

Sophomore Guilianna "Gigi" Clavel started in the pitching circle and allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits in three innings for her first loss of the season after five wins. She walked none and struck out two.

The Hornets, winners of six straight games after opening the season with two losses, finished with 12 hits against three Palomar pitchers in the game which was rescheduled from Feb. 6 due to rain.
