Clavel keeps Tigers caged, 5-1

RIVERSIDE (1/31/2024) – Sophomore pitcher Guilianna "GiGi" Clavel struck out 13 batters in a complete-game effort and aided her own cause with a pair of singles and one run scored at the plate as the Palomar College softball team passed its first road test of the season with a 5-1 victory Wednesday at Riverside City.

The win was the second in as many days for the Comets (2-0) against a team from the Orange Empire Conference after Palomar opened the season at home the previous day with a 12-1 rout of Saddleback.

Clavel improved her record to 2-0 while allowing just one run on three hits in seven innings of work against the Tigers. She walked two, and the only run she allowed came on a solo home run in the second inning which briefly tied the game at 1-1.

Palomar broke the tie with a three-run fourth-inning rally which began with a leadoff single to third base by Clavel. Sophomores Itzell de los Rios and Faith Steffany had RBI singles during the inning, and freshman Isabella De Filippis provided a run-scoring double.

In addition to Clavel, De Filippis and freshman Maddie Scott had two hits apiece for the Comets, who await an update on weather and field conditions for hosting a scheduled three-way involving Pasadena City and L.A. Mission at Bradley Park on Saturday.
