Clavel double trouble as Comets blank Knights

SAN DIEGO (4/7/2023) – Nine different players had hits as Palomar College continued to roll through the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with a 10-0 softball victory on Friday at San Diego City.

The top-ranked Comets (25-0 overall, 7-0 in PCAC) scored five runs in the first inning, three in the second and two in the fifth to dispatch the Knights (5-17, 2-5) in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy-run rule.

Winning pitcher Guilianna "Gigi" Clavel helped her own cause with a pair of run-scoring doubles in her first two at-bats. In the pitching circle, Clavel blanked San Diego City on three hits for her third shutout of the season while improving her record to 8-0. The freshman right-hander walked none and struck two one day after combining with sophomore pitcher India Caldwell on a 1-hit shutout of Mt. San Jacinto.

Sophomore first baseman Allyson Amato drove in two runs with a double and a single, sophomore shortstop Elisa Haas had two singles and three RBIs, and sophomore designated player Aaliyah Rivas also had a pair of singles as the Palomar offense amassed 13 hits.

Palomar was scheduled to be on the road Saturday for a non-conference game at No. 5 Mt. San Antonio before visiting Riverside City on April 11.
