Comets finish conference schedule with 8-0 win over Mesa

SAN DIEGO, CA (4/21/2022) -- Following a split with Southwestern last week, No. 4 Palomar got back to work and defeated San Diego Mesa College 8-0 in five innings for their 14th shutout victory on Thursday to round out their PCAC schedule.

With a shakeup in the lineup, the Comets were caught in a pitcher's duel until the third when the scoring party began. The Comets had runners on first and second when Alexia Terrazas singled to load them up. Kelly Nutter then singled to take a 1-0 lead. Mackenzie Lefebvre then had a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0. Palomar tacked on two more runs in the fourth and sealed the deal in the top of the fifth when they scored three more runs.

India Caldwell (16-3) was the winning pitcher for the Comets as she pitched four innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Farrah Steffany completed the shutout with one inning pitched and striking out all three batters. The pitching staff for the Comets this season has a state second-best ERA with 1.00, just behind Santa Ana who has a 0.98 ERA.

Palomar moves to 29-6 overall and 10-2 in PCAC play. The Comets will face College of the Canyons on the road on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. with the second game beginning roughly 20 minutes following the conclusion of the first.
