Softball advances to another state tournament after victory over Antelope Valley

SAN MARCOS, CA (5/11/2019) – Due to predicted inclement weather, Palomar played two Super Regional games on Friday against Antelope Valley.

The Comets won the first game 5-4 and the second game 8-0.

In the second inning of game one, Jillian Zamora (2-2) singled but advanced to second on the throw and McKenna Crawford (1-3) scored. Kylie Pignone (2-3) then doubled and Zamora scored. Megan Wachholtz (3-4) singled and Pignone then scores.

Kendall Kates (1-3) hit her second career home run in the third inning to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Comets. In the sixth inning, Wachholtz doubled and brought Zamora home.

Allie Hughen pitched the entire first game. She had seven strikeouts and walked three batters. She gave up five hits and four runs, including one two-run home run.

In game two, the Comets were the visiting team.

Wachholtz (0-2) was walked in the third inning and Katie Bananal (0-0) walked across the plate. Pignone (0-3) advanced to second and Crawford (0-1) moved to third. Sarah Fisher (2-4) then reached on a fielder's choice. Crawford was called out at home, but Wachholtz and Pignone were able to score, as did Fisher who was credited with three RBIs.

In the fifth inning, Fisher had a two-run home run. She picked up another RBI in the sixth inning with a single.

On the pitching side, Catalina Aguilar pitched five innings and had three strikeouts and gave up five hits. Audrey Braun pitched one inning and had one strikeout.

With two wins over Antelope Valley, the Comets advance to the CCCAA State Tournament. The tournament will be held at Bakersfield College May 16-19.
