Men pick up third win over Rio Hondo; go 1-3 overall

SAN DIEGO, CA (9/29/2019) – The men traveled south to compete in the South of the Border Tournament.

The men faced familiar opponents over the weekend in Fullerton College and Rio Hondo College.

Palomar faced El Camino first and lost 14-9. The Comets didn't score until the second quarter when Truman Irion found the net, followed by a Zac Lemly goal. Janson Barela and Braden McGuire also scored. Barela and McGuire scored again in the third quarter for the Comets. Irion scored his third goal, as did McGuire. In the fourth quarter, Irion and McGuire both scored. Dalton DeSpain recorded eight saves on 22 shots.

In their second game, they faced Fullerton and lost 9-8. Palomar scored four goals in the first quarter, with goals by Matt Kraszulyak, Bryce Sammons, Nate Taylor and Kevin McCollum. Kraszulyak found the net two more times in the second quarter. Taylor scored once in the third to even the score at seven all. Kraszulyak scored the final goal for the Comets in the fourth, but it wasn't enough in the 9-8 loss. DeSpain had 12 saves on 21 shots.

Palomar then faced Rio Hondo for the third time this season and walked away with a 16-14 win, their third win over the Roadrunners. Three Comets scored three goals: Bryce Sammons, Janson Barela and Nate Taylor. Zane Bentley and Kevin McCollum both had two goals. Scott Richards, Matt Corradetti and Matt Kraszulyak all had one goal apiece. DeSpain had 11 saves on 25 shots.

Their final game of the tournament was against the University of California, San Diego club team. The Comets lost 16-9.

The men are now 5-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They face Southwestern College Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. for their second conference game of the season.
