High spirits keep Comets moving through schedule

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/16/2022) -- The Comets came into this season with a six-game losing streak following the shortened 2020 season. That changed when first-year head coach for the Comets, Mark Smith took over. In the anticipated first match of the season, the Comets battled hard through five sets to get their first victory against Fullerton College. Palomar was led by sophomore Josh Hixon as he recorded 19 kills in five sets. The next three matches, the Comets faced top-ranked Santa Barbara City College, Irvine Valley College and Fullerton College. Palomar got one set win against SBCC, 25-21, in which freshman Peter-Kalani Suiaunoa had 10 kills. Palomar was able to bounce back against Golden West College with a 3-1 victory on the road. Hixon had 13 kills in 24 attacks for a hitting percentage of .542 and recorded three aces.

Palomar has since begun Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play and have faced tough opponents, San Diego Miramar College and Grossmont College. The Comets won one set against Miramar, a 27-25 second set battle to force a fourth set. 

In nine matches this season, the Comets are averagin 11.22 kills per set and 8.53 assists. Hixon leads the team with 68 kills on the season while Suiaunoa sits behind him with 56. Freshman Brian Platte 128 assists. 

Despite their 2-7 overall record, this team is full of spirita nd positivity. Heading into each set with the goal of winning, nothing can bring this team down.
