Four Comets named to All-PCAC team

SAN DIEGO, CA (11/13/2023) -- Sophomore Kael Kortz and freshmen Lucas Meirelles, Alexis Venegas and Efren Mendez were named to the All-PCAC first team.

Kortz, a back from Garopaba, Brazil, was the team captain and showed tremendous leadership as the Comets had a third-place conference finish. He helped the Comets capture four shutouts in their conference schedule, including two against Imperial Valley College. In a 2-1 loss to MiraCosta College, who finished in second place, Kortz had one goal. He also had the game-winning goal against San Diego City College, which came off a header to lift the Comets past the Knights. Kortz started every game for the Comets in his two years. In the 39 games, he had seven goals, three of which were game-winners. Kortz is the only Comet selected for the Sophomore Showcase this season.

Meirelles, another product of Garopaba, played midfield for the Comets. He had five goals in conference play this season, including a season-high two against San Diego City on Oct. 20. Not afraid to give up the ball to get the goal, he recorded six assists in the 11 conference games. Meirelles finished the season with 10 goals and seven assists, totaling 24 points.

Venegas, a commanding midfielder hailing from Orange Glen High School, finished the conference schedule with two assists. He had one against San Diego Mesa College on Sept. 26 in a 2-2 tie and again on Oct. 6 when the Comets defeated Southwestern College 1-0. Also from Orange Glen, Mendez helped control the back line for the Comets. When the Comets had a run, Mendez was able to get off two passes for goals, one against San Diego City on Oct. 20 and again against Imperial Valley On Nov. 7. Mendez also had one goal in the scoring frenzy against Imperial Valley, a game in which eight different Comets scored.

Congratulations Comets!
