
Comets Rally from Early Deficit to Defeat Saddleback in Tournament Opener
EL CAJON, CA (12/6/2024) -- The Palomar College men's basketball team staged a thrilling comeback to edge Saddleback College 62-58 in the opening round of the Grossmont College Invitational. The Comets overcame a sluggish start, trailing 14-2 just 10 minutes into the game, before finding their rhythm and delivering a gritty second-half performance to secure the victory.
Key to Palomar's turnaround was the balanced scoring attack and clutch shooting. Dylan Kail led the way with 12 points, including two three-pointers, providing timely baskets to energize the team. Matin Madadkar stepped up with 11 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the field, and was instrumental in helping Palomar chip away at the early deficit.
Jaidyn Norman added 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, while also showing poise at the free-throw line, hitting six key shots. Isaiah Tolmaire contributed nine points and led the team with five assists, orchestrating the offense and creating opportunities for his teammates. Isaiah Pomare added eight points and four rebounds, delivering consistent play in the paint.
The Comets' defense clamped down in the second half, forcing turnovers and limiting Saddleback's scoring opportunities. Palomar capitalized on mistakes, scoring 13 points off turnovers. They also improved their shooting efficiency in the second half, going 45.5% from the field to outpace Saddleback and seal the win.
With this hard-fought victory, Palomar improves to 4-4 on the season and advances to face San Diego City College in the tournament's second round tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Comets will look to build on their resilience and momentum as they continue their pursuit of the tournament title.
