Comets survive scare to complete the sweep of Olympians

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/22/2023) -- On Saturday afternoon it seemed the Palomar College baseball team was going to suffer it's first conference loss of the season to San Diego Mesa College, but the Comets rallied late and the bullpen silenced the Olympians to pull out the 6-5 win and remain perfect with three games left to play.

Down 5-1 heading into the fifth inning, it was time for some Comet magic. Sophomore Jack Sanders had a leadoff doubled and advanced to third on a flyout. He then scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to three.

The Comets kept chipping away and finally faced an Olympian reliever in the seventh. After back-to-back walks to leadoff the inning, the Comets had runners on first and second with no outs. Something was brewing.

Kyle Harvey stepped to plate after a strikeout by Noah Lazuka and delivered a 2-run double to cut the Olympian lead to just one. Harvey then stole third. Following another strikeout, Ian Halverson was intentionally walked. That gave the Comets runners on the corners with two outs, but they couldn't deliver the run.

In the eighth inning, Sanders worked a walk to get on with one out. Then Quincy Scott did was Quincy Scott does: a two-run shot to give the Comets a one run lead. The Comets had Mike Villani enter for the game for the save in the ninth and he got the Olympians to go down in order on a flyout and two groundouts to pick up his ninth save on the season.

The three-game series showed where the Comets still need work as they get ready for the postseason. The team continued their hot offense in the first game, winning 25-6. Carter Hain homered twice and drove in seven runs. But in game two, the Comets mustered six runs and left 12 runners on base and then left another 12 on base on Saturday.

The Comets move to 31-5 overall and 22-0 in conference play. Palomar will face Southwestern College for the final series of the regular season. They'll be on the road on Tuesday and Friday and will host the Jags on Thursday. All games will begin at 2 p.m.
