Comets sweep Knights in season series

SAN DIEGO, CA (4/1/2023) -- Palomar College completed the three-game sweep of San Diego City College on Saturday afternoon after the Comets both games of the doubleheader. In game one, the Comets won 7-3 and they edged the Knights 7-5 in game two. The Comets took game one earlier in the week 9-3. 

All season, the Comets have had a big inning where they score the majority of their runs, it was a different story on Saturday afternnon. Leading 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Comets had their onlt multi-run inning of the game after a paitr of RBo singles by freshmen Ian Halverson and Hunter Stencil to take a 5-0 lead. The Knights responded with a run of their own in the bottom half, but the Comets just kept plugging along and held the lead. 

In game two, the Comets found themselves down 2-0 heading into the fourth. They elected for small ball once again as sophomore Colby Rafila had an RBI single. Liam Bailey then reached on an error and Tanner Lapping scored the second run. Halverson then recorded his second RBI single of the day to give the Comets the lead. The Knights tied it up in the bottom half. The Comets then scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh to reclaim and maintain their lead. 

Kyle Carr was given the nod in game one and pitched five innings. He allowed one unearned run on three hits, walked tow and struck out five. He was the winning pitcher and advanced to 8-1 on the season. He is the state leader in wins this season. Jack Kelley pitched one inning of relief and allowed one run. Blake Ignaciak pitched two and allowed one run on two hits, walked three and struck out four. Mike Villani closed out the game and allowed one hit and struck out one. 

Evan Langer was the starting pitcher in game two. He went three innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three. Sabastian Castro was the winning pitcher (1-0). He pitched two and allowed one run on one hit and struck out three. The Hamro brothers entered next. Wyatt putched 2.1 and allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts, while Carson was given his first save of the game in his 1.2 innings pitched. He didn't allowed a hit and struck out two.

The Comets advance to 20-5 overall and 12-0 in conference play. They will gear up for a three-game series against Imperial Valley College. They will host games one and three on Tuesday and Friday. First pitches are scheduled for 2 p.m. Palomar will also host Pasadena City College on Saturday for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
