Bio

In 15 seasons as the Comets' wrestling coach, his teams went 179-19-3, won four state team championships and three state dual titles, and produced 11 state weight-class champions and 51 community college All-Americans. He was California Wrestling Coach of the Year four times and also was National Community College Wrestling Coach of the Year four times. Hversaw Palomar's expansion to more than 20 sports from the time he became Athletic Director until his retirement in 2007. Prior to Palomar: Three-time All-American. National Champion at 167 pounds in NCAA Division II and national runner-up in Division I at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, both in the same season as a senior, losing to Iowa State's two-time NCAA champion Jason Smith in the finals. That season, he earned Division I and Division II All-American honors in the same season. Woods was a team captain in 1969, selected to the NCAA East/West All-Star Team in 1969 and led Cal Poly to NCAA Division II team championships in both 1968 and 1969. He arned Bachelor's and Masters' degrees from Cal Poly, and coached Orange Glen High to a 45-9-2 record before becomeing Palomar's head coach in 1973. After Palomar / Currently: Became Commissioner of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in 2007. Also is Commissioner of Southern California community college wrestling and served a two-year stint as a Dean and Athletic Director at Pasadena City College. Also: Woods is a member of the Redwoods High School (Visalia) Hall of Fame, the NCAA Division II Hall of Fame, the NCAA Wrestling Hall of Fame, the California Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Cal Poly Hall of Fame, the California Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame and, as of Jan. 30, the Palomar College Athletic Hall of Fame.Introduced by his former wrestler Joe Ismay, who followed him as Palomar's head coach.
