Bio

Wiland came out of Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa to star for the Comets playing both ways under the late Bob Bowman in football and as a pitcher/position player under the late Rusty Myers in baseball. His 9 home runs as a sophomore in 1961 stood as a Palomar record for 20 years, and his .447 batting average in conference as a sophomore also stood as a school record for 20 years. At the University of Iowa, he compiled an 11-2 pitching record over two seasons and was MVP on the Hawkeyes' 1963 team that finished one game behind champion Illinois in the Big Ten. That Iowa team was ranked as high as 11th in the nation. As a senior, Wiland beat Minnesota, the following year's College World Series champion, 2-1, throwing 78 pitches in one hour, 28 minutes. He still holds two Iowa records, fewest bases on balls in a season (6) and lowest ERA (0.43 during his junior season of 1962). Returning to California after one season as a graduate assistant at Iowa, Wiland was a Palomar assistant coach in football under Mack Wiebe and was Bob Vetter's pitching coach in baseball from 1987 through 1990. He also was head football and wrestling coach at Fallbrook High School, was a minor league pitching coach in the Montreal Expos organization and was an associate scout fro the Expos and Colorado Rockies. Wiland earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Iowa.
