Bio

Sylvia Quirk, who came to Palomar College as a graduate of nearby Vista High School, was one of the premier multi-sport athletes in the early days of the Comet women’s sports program. Quirk teamed with contemporary Sue Machamer in leading Palomar to domination of Mission Conference foes in the sport of volleyball, as the Comets captured conference championships in both 1978 and 1979. In the spring season, the two-sport star continued to perform on a high level, placing in no less than five events at the California Community College State Track and Field Championship Meet. In fact, Quirk’s marks, projected forward from the 1980 Mission Conference Finals, would have given her five first-place finishes at the 2017 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championship Meet. Not surprisingly, Quirk was honored as the Mission Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1980.
