Bio

MVP on Palomar's 1974 team and likely the best pitcher in the program's first 30 years. Switching from first base to pitching between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Johnson went 9-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 1974, was drafted by the Angels but suffered a career-ending arm injury in his first pro appearance, for Idaho Falls, and never pitched again. Brother of former Palomar and San Jose State baseball infielder / football kicker Randy Johnson, who went on to start at third base in the Major Leagues for the Atlanta Braves, has been a Major League scout / field coordinator / assistant to the general manager since his retirement as a player, is currently a pro scout for the Detroit Tigers and was a charter Palomar Hall of Fame inductee. Prior Palomar: Donnie Johnson played at Escondido High School. Was also a bowler with a high game of 288 and played for the Vista Bombers national class men's fastpitch softball team.
