Bio

Alvarez came out of Vista High School to lead Palomar to back-to-back conference championships in 1999 and 2000 under coach Bob Vetter. He hit .410 as a sophomore, making first-team all-conference and all-state, and his career RBI total (85) is third on the Comets' all-time list. He holds the Palomar record for hits in a game (6) and hit two grand-slam home runs in the same ining in a game against Grossmont in 2000. At Texas Tech, Alvarez set a Big 12 consectuvie-game hitting streak record (30 games) that stood for 10 years. He hit .338 as a junior for the Red Raiders and .328 as a senior as a two-time All-Big 12 first-team selection at shortstop. He led Texas Tech to two NCAA post-season appearances. Drafted in the 16th round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2002, Alvarez played shortstop, second base and third base and pitched over seven minor league-seasons and advanced to the Triple-A level with the Orioles' Norfolk Tides farm club in the International League. He was Director of the Pittsburgh Pirates' Dominican Baseball Academy and is in his second stint as a manager in the Pirates' farm system
