Bio

After missing most of his freshman season due to a non-baseball injury in 1982, Troy Afenir became a first-team all-state catcher at Palomar College under Coach Bob Vetter in 1983. That season, the Escondido High School product slugged a conference-high 13 home runs and totaled 43 runs batted in. Drafted in the first round by the Houston Astros after previously having been selected in the first round by the Chicago Cubs, Afenir signed with Houston and quickly rose to the major-league level. Over the next six years, he played for the Astros, Oakland A’s and Cincinnati Reds. Known for his defensive skills as a catcher, he made only one error in his entire major-league career. Afenir returned to Palomar as an assistant coach to Buck Taylor between 2009 and 2012, prior to beginning a professional scouting career with the New York Yankees. Introduced by: Bob Vetter
