Football: Wachholtz, Vargas, and Zimmerman Sign to 4 Years

Chandler Wachholtz

A sophomore out of La Costa Canyon high school in Carlsbad, California, commits to the University of Louisiana, Lafayette to finish out his next 2 years of eligibility. Wachholtz was the Comets leading defender where he led the team in tackles and forced fumbles from the linebacker position. Wachholtz was responsible for leading the defensive stand for the Comets setting the tone for all of the close games. He will join the Division I Ragin' Cajuns in the Sun Belt Conference hoping to help them improve their 4-7 record from last season. Wachholtz was selected as the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men's Athlete of the Week for all sports November 14th, 2017 for his exceptional display of his defensive abilities. He recorded 12 tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss as he led the defensive stand against Grossmont to secure a win 17-14, and give the Comets a chance for a playoff bid (which they eventually won) in the last game of the regular season.

 

Tyler Vargas

A sophomore kicker out of Ramona high school in Ramona, California, commits to NAIA, Sterling College for the 2018 football season. The Warriors were 9-3 on the season last year, going 4-1 at home. Vargas made 9-of-15 field goals on the year with a long of 50 yards. He excelled in the P-A-T going 29-31 at 94% made. Vargas collected 56 points for the Comets with his foot and looks to bring that talent to Kansas and the Sterling Warriors.

 

Nick Zimmerman

A sophomore defensive tackle out of Oceanside high school in Oceanside, California, commits to University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Cougars went 9-3 on the year in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the NCAA Division II. Zimmerman looks to add to their record with his 2 years of collegiate experience and defensive presence. Zimmerman had 2 consistent years with the Comets where he picked up 19 tackles and 23 assists where he participated in 42 tackles in his two years with 2.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.
