Romero (offense), Woods (defense) are Southern Conf. Players of Week

SAN MARCOS (10-03-2017) -- Palomar's Devonte Woods and Matt Romero have been honored as Southern Conference Players of the Week after Saturday's games.

Woods, a 5-foot-8, 182-pound sophomore cornerback from Father Lopez High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, blocked two conversion kicks in the Comets' 31-25 non-conference victory over Chaffey at Escondido High's Chick Embrey Field at Wilson Stadium. He narrowly missed blocking a third PAT.

Woods' performance tied the 2008 Palomar record set by Chris Bodreaux, who went on to star at Nevada and went to training camp with the San Francisco 49ers.

Romero, the Comets' 6-foot-2, 210-pound sophomore quarterback out of Oceanside High School, passed for 249 yards and four touchdowns in being named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time.

Romero's 16 passing touchdowns through the Comets' first five games lead the state and nation. He has one more TD completion than the next three quarterbacks on the national list who each has 15 -- Grant Lowary (Long Beach City College), Frank Cosio (College of Merced in Northern California) and Christian Lopez (Mesa Community College of Arizona).

Romero passed for 249 yards on the night and has thrown for 1,526 yards for an average of 305.2 yards per game, which ranks him second among California community college quarterbacks and fourth in the country. Shannon Patrick from Northland Community & Technical College of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, leads the nation at 374.3 yards per game.
