Women's wrestling starts season off strong

Comets family and friends,

This past weekend, we had a partial squad kick off our women's wrestling season at the Cerritos Open.

While this was our season opener, it was also more than likely the toughest tournament on our schedule. We saw a handful of tough 4-year teams, including current #1 in the nation Menlo College.

Here's how we performed:

Sierra Mefford, 2nd - In arguably the toughest weight class of the tournament, Sierra made the finals after a dramatic last second takedown against a nationally ranked Menlo opponent. She then lost in the finals against the #4 ranked wrestler in the country. This was a solid start to her sophomore campaign. However, high goals demand high expectations, and there are plenty of little things we can improve upon from her finals match. Great job, Sierra!

Cassandra Betancourt, 3rd - I'm very proud of Cassie's performance this weekend. Despite not being on a competition mat in years, Cassie went toe-to-toe with some seasoned competitors from 4-year schools, including a former California high school state champion in her first match. She won her next three matches straight to earn the bronze. Excellent effort!

Alexa Rosales, DNP - Despite not placing, Alexa wrestled tough against some solid competition. She will need to adjust to her new weight class and also shake the cobwebs off of some of her baseline skills. I'm confident that she'll make the right adjustments with more practice and matches. 1% better!

Overall, I'm impressed with how we competed with just a few weeks of practice under our belts. Competition reveals many new things to focus on, which is just part of the process of getting better throughout the season.

Up next, we'll have a bigger squad in action in our first dual of the season at Santa Ana College on February 28th!
