Four Comets named to All-PCAC teams

SAN DIEGO, CA (11/16/2023) -- Four Comets have been named to All-PCAC teams after finishing their conference schedule 11-5 and the regular season 13-11. 

Freshmen Janell Spires and Sonsi Jarvis were named First Team All-PCAC and sophomores Mayara Swillens and Hope Ihem were named Second Team All-PCAC.

In 15 conference matches played Spires was dynamite for the Comets. She totaled 137 kills, averaging 2.85 a set, and 119 digs, 2.48 a set. She also had 32 aces and nine blocks. Against Grossmont College on Sept. 20, she had a season-high 19 kills. As Palomar moved through their conference schedule, Spires continued to improve. She totaled seven aces, a season-high, against San Diego City College on Oct. 27, a night in which she also finished with 10 digs and nine kills. She then had another six aces against Cuyamaca College on Nov. 8.

Jarvis, a freshman opposite hitter from Fallbrook, was a consistent force for Palomar this season. She recorded 12 kills twice this season, once against MiraCosta College on Sept. 15 and against Southwestern College on Oct. 13. Also in the MiraCosta match, she recorded 11 digs and four aces. Her season-high for aces was on Oct. 13 in the Southwestern match when she totaled five. During the conference season, she totaled 102 kills, 17 aces and 72 digs.

Swillens returned for her sophomore season ready to shine as the starting setter. As the season progressed, so did she, becoming an all-around player for the Comets. She had a season-high 44 assists against Cuyamaca College on Nov. 8. She also finished with 40 against rival MiraCosta College on Oct. 18. Swillens had a season-high match against Southwestern College on Oct. 13 where she finished with five kills and 10 digs. Like all the Comets this season, Swillens had the magic touch when serving and racked up five aces against San Diego City College on Sept. 27. She finished the conference schedule with 21 kills, 382 assists, averaging 7.64 a set, 17 aces, 68 digs and 13 blocks. 

Ihem, a dominant middle blocker for the Comets, worked her way through the conference schedule one match at a time. She ended the conference season on a high note, finishing with a season and career-high 13 kills against Cuyamaca College on Nov. 8. In her last two matches, she hit .778 and .684, respectively. Ihem got the fans fired up all season long as she went to finish conference play with 91 kills, 11 digs and 19 blocks.
