Comets keep rolling through conference

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/27/2023) -- The No. 1 Palomar College Comets keep rolling as they picked up two additional over PCAC opponents San Diego Mesa College and San Diego City College. After unusually slow starts in both games, the Comets started to pull away late in the second quarter of both games.

Palomar has proven teams can match them at the beginning of each game, but the Comets keep playing and their opponents start to fall behind. The score is typically close, but then sophomore Deajanae Harvey and company head to the races and pull away and before you know it, they are up by 20 points. Then 30. Then 40. Then 50. And that seems to be the case year in and year out when it comes to conference play for head coach Leigh Marshall and her teams. And this year is no exception.

The City Knights kept the game close, as Palomar only led by five points after the first quarter of play. It wasn't until the halfway mark the Comets really got going. Outscoring the Knights 28-11 in the second, Palomar had a comfortable lead at the half. They kept their foot on the gas, scoring 30 in the third, to the Knights' seven. It was shot for shot in the fourth as both teams scored 13 each.

Harvey led all scorers with 26 points and totaled nine rebounds, six assists and six steals. Sophomore Camille Sroufe was the only other Comet in double-digits with 14 points. Sophomore Rory Hetrick finished the night with seven rebounds.

Palomar will head to Grossmont College on Wednesday night before host Southwestern College on Friday night in the Dome for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
