Comets open season at Golden West Sprint Invite

COSTA MESA, CA (2/24/2023) -- Palomar College traveled to Costa Mesa for the Golden West Sprint Invite held at Orange Coast College. The men competed in 15 events, including four relays.

The day started with the 200Y Medley relay, in which Palomar's second relay team finished in 6th with a time of 1:48.38 after the A team was disqualified. Ajay Ahooja finished in 6th place in the 100Y Fly ith a time of 54.86 and Cristos Birbilis finished in 27th. Kevin Brunia took home the 50Y Breast with a time of 27.71 and Cody Poure finished in 9th with a time of 33.60. In the 100Y Back, Jacob Rochman and Ansel Johnson finished 2-3 with times of 55.37 and 56.03, respectively. Manuel Carriles finished in 17th in the event. 

The 50Y Free saw Tim Godin and Brunia go 5-6 with times of 22.33 and 22.45, respectively. In the 100Y Breast, Ahooja finished in 3rd with a time of 1:06.66, while Emmanuel De La Torre and Poure finished in 10th and 13th. Johnson finished in 3rd for the 200Y IM with a time of 2:07.59. Godin finished in 2nd in the 200Y Free with a time of 1:45.73 and Johnson finished in 6th (1:53.72). Ahooja won the 50Y fly with a time of 24.65 and Godin won the 100Y Free with a time of 49.17. Rochman and Brunia also raced in the event and finished in 4th and 12th with times of of 49.91 and 53.37, respectively. In the final individual race, the 50Y Back, De La Torre finished in 3rd with a time of 28.67 while Poure finished in 7th with a time of 35.05. 

In the remaining relays, the Comets won the 400Y Medley with a time of 3:38.43. They finished in third in the 200Y Free with a time of 1:30.05 and the B relay team took 6th (3:44.85) in the 400Y Free.
