Comets take season opener 3-2 over Mustangs

SAN MARCOS, CA (8/31/2021) -- In their first match of the season, Palomar defeated Norco College 3-2 in regulation. 

The Comets were the first to strike when Jose Mondragon scored on an assist from Jacob Stutzman in the 24th minute. Norco came back two minutes later to tie up the game. Palomar had a second chance to score, this time on a penalty kick by Ben Dennis. He gave the Comets a 2-1 lead in the 45th minute. In the second half, Jase Holmes passed the ball over the top to Eddie Villagrana for a wide open goal to give the Comets a 3-1 lead. The Norco Mustangs scored their second goal on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper, Chris Perez, had eight saves on 10 shots on goals. Vince Gonzalez, Thomas Marques, John Bernal, Dustin Vena and David Cruz all had one shot and Mondragon had two. Villagrana and Bernal both received a yellow card. 

Palomar will be on the road against Moorpark College on Friday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m.
