Comets tame Jaguars on the road
CHULA VISTA, CA (9/18/2021) -- On Saturday, the Palomar Comets took on Southwestern in their third game of the season, this time taking a 26-7 victory.
Running back Tawee Walker (Centennial) got the party started in the first quarter, breaking tackle after tackle to score a touchdown from 3 yards out. Later, in the second quarter, despite a mishandled snap, Walker took the ball 50 yards all the way to the endzone for his second touchdown of the night. In the third quarter, quarterback Zeke Payne (Rancho Bernardo) hit wide receiver Brandon Johnson (El Camino) on a slant route for a touchdown, the third touchdown of the game for the Comets.
Payne went 12-28, 170 yards and one passing touchdown. Tawee Walker had a monster game, racking up 20 carries for 154 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Wide receiver Brandon Johnson led the Comets with three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown. Linebackers Khalid Walker (Mojave) and Luke Manos (Rancho Bernardo) led the team in tackles with 9 and 6 respectively. Defensive backs Ricky Davis (Arbor View) and Kris Sanchez (La Costa Canyon) each recorded an interception. Davis now has three on the season and Sanchez has two. Kicker Landon Ogles (Rancho Bernardo) knocked down two field goals and two extra points.
The Comets had a staggering 406 yards of total offense in just 61 plays, 170 yards came from the air and 236 yards came from the ground. The defense gave up just 236 yards on 65 plays; 155 yards came from the air and 81 yards came from the ground. The Comets as a team did not commit a penalty on the night.
The Comets move up to 2-1 on the season and will face College of the Canyons on the road on September 25 at 6 p.m.
