Comets sweep Fighting Cacti in season opener

SAN MARCOS, CA (8/27/2021) -- The sound of a volleyball being spiked and cheers returned to the Dome on Friday as women's volleyball opened their season with a 3-0 win over Copper Mountain College.
After months of return-to-play COVID protocols, women's volleyball had the honor of opening the 2021-22 athletic competition season. They took the first set 25-17 over the Fighting Cacti and dominated the final two sets, 25-8 and 25-9, respectively.
Freshman Casey Widdoss led the team with 11 kills on 16 attempts and scored 14.5 points for the Comets. Sophomore Alana Lacangan had 14 assists in the setter position and freshman setter, Kenna Broach, totaled six. Freshman Milana Kansky had five service aces.
The Comets are 1-0 in play and will face San Bernardino Valley College on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. in the Dome. No fans are allowed in the Dome for the time being due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The event will be livestreamed on Facebook Live here.
