Comets sweep Jaguars in conference opener

CHULA VISTA, CA (2/28/2020) – In their first conference match of the season, the Comets defeated the Southwestern Jaguars 9-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Comets got control early in the match when Cali Smith and Mila Beentjes defeated Southwestern's Tairys Jimenez and Andrea Reyes 8-3 to stay undefeated on the season. Then Kathy Henderson and Clare Redick beat Sarina Martinez and Ariana Martinez 8-1 for a 2-0 lead. Finally, Sarah Elizondo and Grace Powel took down Natalia Mendoza and Gian Celario 8-3.

In the singles, four Comets did not allow a Jaguar to score a single point in their first sets. Beentjes faced A. Martinez in the No. 3 spot and won 6-0, 6-1 and Redick faced S. Martinez in the No. 4 spot and also won 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 5 and No. 6 spots were Elizondo and Powel, respectively. Elizondo defeated Mendoza 6-0, 6-2 and Powel defeated Celario 6-0, 6-4. Henderson competed in the No. 2 spot and defeated Jimenez 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 1 spot was Smith who had the closest match of any Comet. She defeated Reyes 6-4, 6-3. Henderson and Elizondo are the only Comets undefeated on the season in their singles matches. ne

The Comets will face San Diego City College on Thursday, Feb. 20 for their first home match of the season. First serve will be at 2 p.m.
