Wrestling wins hardware at SoCal Regionals

Comets family and friends,

This Saturday, the Comets competed at the CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships. In an inspiring team performance, we earned the 3rd place team trophy, our second CCCAA award this year. It was a back-and-forth team race until the very end, and every single one of our guys contributed.

Nine wrestlers punched their tickets to the CCCAA Championships:

133 - Owen Wilson, 7th

141 - Dustin Riquelme, 7th

149 - Dorian Parker, 5th

157 - JJ Gutierrez, CHAMPION

165 - Hassan Alexander, 6th

174 - Daniel Hernandez, 3rd

184 - Celso Silva, 2nd

197 - Jesus Rodriguez, 6th

HWT - Javier Montoya, 7th

Top ten teams:

  1. Mt. San Antonio
  2. Cerritos
  3. Palomar
  4. Bakersfield
  5. Victor Valley
  6. Rio Hondo
  7. Santa Ana
  8. Moorpark
  9. East Los Angeles
  10. Cuesta

Posting the tournament results simply doesn't capture the fighting spirit our guys had this weekend. ALL OF THIS had to happen for us to place third:

  • Randy Lockwood was an absolute warrior and chose to fight on one leg for his team. He won two matches and prevented his other opponents from getting bonus point wins.
  • JJ Gutierrez pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory to win the 157 lbs. championship and defeat his opponent from Mt. SAC, who had beaten him earlier in the season.
  • Celso Silva and Jesus Rodriguez both avenged losses from our dual against Rio Hondo. Celso pinned his opponent for bonus points and would go on to make the finals.
  • Daniel Hernandez pinned his opponent from Cuesta, who had pinned him earlier in the season. He finished with the third-place medal, his highest tournament placing as a Comet.
  • Hassan Alexander pinned a state-ranked opponent from Cuesta.
  • Denzel Ayala earned his very first victory as a Comet and pinned his opponent for bonus points.
  • After giving up the first takedown, Javier Montoya dug deep and defeated his opponent from Cuesta. He won 10-2 for bonus points.

We'll be looking to ride this momentum into the CCCAA Championships at West Hills College in Lemoore. Competition will run Friday and Saturday. Tickets can be purchased on the CCCAA website: https://cccaa.hometownticketing.com/embed/all
