Galicia finishes as state runner-up, Conroy takes fourth at CCCAA State Tournament

FRESNO, CA (12/14/2019) – Six Comets wrestlers competed for individual state titles over the weekend at the CCCAA State Tournament at Fresno City College.

Enrique Galicia competed in the heavyweight class as the No. 1 seed from the South. He faced Randy Arriaga from Cerritos after a first-round bye and won on a 4-2 decision. He then faced Victor Yakshin from Sierra College. Galicia won and found himself in the championship match, where he faced Armando Barcenas from Fresno City. The two were in a stalemate the first three minutes of the match. Galcia was ab;e to get on the board with an escape in the second period. Barecenas tied it up at 1-1 in the final period. Galicia then got tangled up and Barcenas got the points for the takedown. The final score was 5-2.

Joey Conroy was the No. 1 seed in the South for the 184-weight class. After a first-round bye, he faced East LA's Zapien. Conroy pinned Zapien 4:02 into the match to reach the quarterfinals. He then faced Jacob Annis from Bakersfield and lost, sending him to the loser's bracket. After pulling out a win, Conroy found himself in the third-place match wrestling Ryan Rucklos from Lassen College. Rucklos defeated Conroy on a major fall with a score of 8-0. Conroy finished in fourth place.

Juan Diaz wrestled Brandon Mendoza in the opening round of the 125-weight class. Mendoza won had a 7-1 decision, sending Diaz to the loser's bracket. Diaz then faced a wrestler from Mt. San Antonio college and lost in a 7-2 decision.

In the 149-weight class, Lance McNatt represented the Comets. He first faced Greg Ewert, the No. 5 seed from the north. Ewert won on a technical fall 3:59 into the match with a score of 18-1. Trying to battle back from the loser's bracket, McNatt faced V'Ante Moore from Cerritos. Moore won on a 13-6 decision.

Frank Sanchez faced Delta College's Darin Chick in the 165-weight class. Chick pinned Sanchez 2:11 into the match. Sanchez then faced Alexander Thomburg from Sacramento City College and was pinned 5:16 into the match.

Jesus Hernandez wrestled in the 197-weight class. He faced Lazaro Carrasco from Chabot College. Hernandez was pinned 2:28 into the match. He then faced Patrick Slatic from West-Hills and lost on a major decision with a score of 9-1.
