Henderson qualifies for state championship after SoCal regional

SAN DIMAS, CA (11/11/2019) – Women's golf competed in the CCCAA SoCal Regionals held at6 Via Verde Country Club over the weekend.

Kathy Henderson qualified for the CCCAA State Championships at Morro Bay (Nov 17th and 18th), by finishing T-7th overall and #2 as an Individual.  Kathy carded a first round 88, then backed it up with a 2nd round 77 to score 165 for the two-round tournament.

Via Verde is a narrow course that requires precision shots off the tee and accurate approach shots. Greens are tough if you get the ball on the wrong side of the hole.

The first round for Kathy was solid for 15 of the 18 holes. Kathy started with a birdie to open up the tournament but made bogey on the narrow par 5 2nd. Her first errant shot came on hole 4 where she pulled her tee shot left out of bounds and made a quadruple bogey 8. She gathered herself nicely and played solid until a double bogey on 10.  Then on the Par 3 13th, Kathy again pulled her tee shot out of bounds left. She made another quadruple bogey 7. Kathy ended day 1 in 14th place overall and risked missing out on qualifying for State.

On day two, Henderson started off solid. She got revenge on the 4th hole with a beautiful drive, nice approach and a 2 putt Par.  She made the turn at 39 (3 over). With a solid back 9, Kathy had a great chance to qualify for State.  Kathy wasted no time as she birdied holes 10 and 11. A bogey on 13 and another birdie on 14 kept the momentum going. Although Kathy finished double bogey, bogey, she had put herself well within the score needed to qualify.

Kumi Higuchi (110 / 111 = 221) finished in 41st place and Hailey Bjerknes (116 / 107 = 223) placed 43rd

There were 58 competitors in the tournament.
