Huey HR lifts Comets over SD City

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/17/2025) – Alexis Huey saved her biggest hit for her third hit of the game, clouting a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday to give Palomar College an 11-3 victory over San Diego City College in the penultimate Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball contest of the season for the Comets.

With Palomar holding a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, the Comets scored the required five runs to bring on the mercy-run rule and raise their conference record to 15-0 with one PCAC game remaining. Palomar clinched its 11th consecutive PCAC pennant the previous day with a 6-0 win at Grossmont.

Ranked No. 2 in the latest state poll, the Comets improved to 33-3 overall with their third win of the season against the Knights, who fell to 3-11 in conference and 14-23 overall.

Huey, a freshman getting another start at first base, was 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs. She doubled to left-center field as part of a first-inning rally which began with a leadoff home run off the right-field foul pole by sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz for her ninth homer of the season.

A single to right by sophomore second baseman Josephine Hueberger and the double by Huey led to another run, and Huey came around to score on the first of two singles by freshman designated hitter Lauren Doepping as Palomar reversed a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Freshman center fielder Gisele Gonzalez led off the second inning with the first of her three hits, a single to left field which was followed by a bunt single by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez. Lutz delivered a run-scoring single to right before Heuberger reached on a fielder's choice groundout. Heuberger then stole second base, and when the catcher's throw went into the outfield for an error, Nuanez came around to score.

Heuberger advanced to third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Huey as the hosts assumed a 6-2 advantage after two innings. The Comets were held scoreless over the next two frames, while the Knights added a run in the top of the fifth inning at shave Palomar's lead to three runs.

Palomar responded in the bottom of the fifth, which began with a double to right by freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia. Sophomore catcher Kayla Visser singed to left and advanced to second on an unsuccessful throw to third in an attempt to retire freshman pinch-runner Dominique Garcia.

A wild pitch scored Garcia, and Visser also scored when the catcher's throw to the plate was off target for another error, giving Palomar an 8-3 lead. Gonzalez followed with her third single of the game, and two outs later freshman second baseman Aubrey Thorne drew a walk. Huey then smacked her game-ending blast over the fence in center field for her second home run of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Nevaeh Haywood picked up the win in the circle to improve her record to 14-2. The right-hander worked five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in the first inning before settling in and limiting San Diego City to one run on three hits the rest of the way. Haywood finished with two walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts to help the Comets secure their eighth straight victory.

For the final weekend of the regular season, Palomar will host College of the Canyons in a non-conference doubleheader on April 19. The Comets will wrap up conference play with a home game against Grossmont on April 22.

The California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs begin May 2.
