Comets blank Jags, remain unbeaten in PCAC

CHULA VISTA, CA (4/8/2025) – Home runs by Zoe Karam and Isabella De Filippis provided the offensive bookends and Maddie Bedolla pitched six scoreless innings with double-digit strikeouts as Palomar College defeated Southwestern, 8-0, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball matchup on Tuesday.

Karam, a sophomore first baseman, opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning for the visitors. For Karam, it was her state-leading 10th homer of the season.

De Filippis capped the scoring in the top of the seventh inning when her two-run home run finished off a four-run rally which sealed the outcome for Palomar. The round-tripper was the second of the season for the sophomore catcher.

Bedolla blanked the Jaguars over six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters, matching her season high. Bedolla, a sophomore left-hander who improved to 15-1, also fanned 11 against Antelope Valley on Feb. 14.

Sophomore right-hander Nevaeh Haywood pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish off Palomar's 14th shutout of the season. The win improved the state's No. 2-ranked team to 28-3 overall and 10-0 in PCAC play and completed a three-game season sweep of Southwestern, which fell to 9-24 and 3-8.

Sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger hit a triple and a single for Palomar, and freshman designated player Lauren Doepping had two doubles, including a two-run two-bagger in the third inning which gave the Comets a 4-0 lead. De Filippis also had two hits for the winners.

Palomar returns home April 10 for a 3 p.m. PCAC contest against San Diego Mesa. The Comets have a 2½-game lead over Mesa in the PCAC standings with five conference games to play.
