Comets run past Jaguars in 13-0 win

SAN MARCOS, CA (3/17/2022) -- No. 7 Palomar had the luck of the Irish on their side today as they pushed past Southwestern in a 13-0 five inning victory.

Southwestern came ready to play as they loaded the bases in the top of the first, but Palomar didn't break a sweat. Freshman pitcher India Caldwell recorded her second strikeout of the game and got the next batter to pop up to third to get the Comets out of the jam. Stuck in a 0-0 tie, the Comets got two runs in the second and opened the floodgates in the third scoring 10 runs.

The scoring frenzy began after designated player Mackenzie Lefebvre walked and Angelique Schermerhorn came in to pinch run. Outfielder Alexia Terrazas doubled to score Schermerhorn. Then second baseman Malachy Russell-Millen was hit by a pitch. First baseman Hannah Beyer singled to load the bases. The Jaguars then walked a run across the plate and outfielder Cadee Herrmann singled to score another run. The Jaguars walked two more runs across the plate before making a pitching change and then walked another run in. That brought Terrazas bought to the plate where she singled. Russell-Millen then ripped a ball to left-field and reached first on the dropped ball by the leftfielder to clear the bases for three unearned runs. Palomar picked up their final run in the fourth inning when Aiyanna Hernandez reached first on a fielder's choice and Destiny Cisneros scored.

Caldwell pitched three innings in which she allowed just one hit and walked one batter. She recorded six strikeouts. Farrah Steffany came in to finish the game and allowed one hit and struck out one batter in two innings pitched. Caldwell was the winning pitcher and moves to 9-2 on the season.

Palomar moves to 17-3 overall and 3-1 in PCAC play. They hit the road to face No. 1 Mt. San Antonio and College Santiago Canyon on Saturday at Santiago Canyon. First game (Mt. SAC) is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
