Comets take down Olympians 9-1 in PCAC opener

SAN DIEGO, CA (3/9/2022) -- Palomar picked up their first conference win this season with a 9-1 victory over the San Diego Mesa College Olympians. 

The two teams were in a pitching battle, controlled mainly by freshman India Caldwell, until the fourth inning when the Comets opened the flood gates. With two runners on, outfielder Alexia Terrazas doubled to score the two Comets. Malachy Russell-Millen then singled to bring home Terrazas. In the next inning, the Comets tacked on four more runs. After reaching first on an error and then stealing second, outfielder Cadee Herrmann came around to score on an Allyson Amato single. Outfielder Taylor Harrison then walked. With runners on first and second, designated hitter Mackenzie Lefebvre, singled to score Amato. Angelique Schermerhorn pinch ran for Lefebrve and then stole second. Terrazas reached on a fielder's choice, while Harrison scored another run for the Comets.The final run of the inning came when Russell-Millen reached on a fielder's choice and Terrazas scored on an error by the third baseman. In the seventh inning, Palomar scored two the final two runs. They finished the day with nine runs on none hits and no errors. 

Freshman pitcher India Caldwell pitched the entirety of the game, allowing just one run on seven hits. She struck out seven batters. Caldwell improves to 7-1 on the season.

Palomar will host Imperial Valley College on Friday for a doubleheader. First game will begin at 12, followed by the second game roughly 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
